What is Gonorrhoea?
Gonorrhoea is sometimes called ‘gono’. It’s an STI caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is more common in guys who have sex with guys.
Are there any symptoms?
You may only notice symptoms when you urinate (pee).
Guys- if you do notice symptoms, they’ll be different depending on where the infection is. For gonorrhoea in your urethra (where your pee comes out), you may notice pain when urinating or discharge (watery fluid) coming from your penis. For gonorrhoea in your anus (bum ), you may notice discharge coming from your anus. If gonorrhoea is in the throat, you probably won’t notice any symptoms.
Girls- if you do notice symptoms it may include unusual discharge from your vagina, pain when urinating, or pain during sex. If gonorrhoea isn’t treated, it can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which may make it hard to get pregnant.
How do you catch it?
You can catch gonorrhoea by having oral, vaginal or anal sex without a condom sex with someone who has gonorrhoea. You can catch and pass on gonorrhoea even when you don’t notice any symptoms.
What about Prevention? Testing? Treatment?
Use condoms during oral, vaginal or anal sex to stop you catching or passing on gonorrhoea. If you or your partner is taking antibiotic pills to treat gonorrhoea, make sure you don’t have sex, even using a condom, until 7 days after finishing the antibiotics. And make sure you get regular STI check-ups at your doctor to find out if you have gonorrhoea.
Guys- If you notice symptoms of gonorrhoea around the end of your penis, your doctor will test you through a urine test. If you notice symptoms in your anus or mouth, a doctor will test you using a throat swab.
Girls- if you notice symptoms, a doctor will test you through a urine test or you can choose a vaginal swab.
The good thing is if you have gonorrhoea, your doctor will give you antibiotics that will cure it. It’s also important to let anyone that you may have had sex with recently know, so they can be testedand treated too. This is called contact tracing.
